Review: An excellent book that grips the reader through first-hand accounts, rare photos, maps and line illustrations. The book centers around William Eric Louis Seward, an RFC pilot who served in the Middle East during WWI. WELS (as he is referred to throughout the book) was only able to become a pilot through great effort as he had medical issues but the times being what they were he made the extra effort.

flew with his fellow pilots under really terrible conditions in machines which were primitive and, by the standards of the time, already rapidly becoming obsolete. Meanwhile, German and Austro-Hungarian pilots sent to help the Turks were equipped with machines which were the cutting edge of aviation technology at that point in the war.

Interestingly, the pilots who flew against each other seemed to have practiced a form of chivalry that was quickly becoming obsolete on the Western Front. This and observations about Lawrence of Arabia, the pleasures of Cairo, the battles for Gaza and General Allenby make this not just a valuable resource for aviation history, a great book for those interested in WWI history, but simply a fun read for anyone.
